The ghost mannequin effect shows a garment holding its worn shape with no visible model or mannequin inside. It is produced by photographing the garment on a mannequin, taking a second shot of the inner collar, then compositing the two and removing the mannequin.

Keep camera position, focal length and lighting identical between shots. Any change in perspective or colour temperature shows immediately at the composite seam.
Why apparel is the hard case
A rigid product has a defined, opaque boundary that segmentation handles reliably. Fabric does not. Knitwear has a fuzzy edge where individual fibres extend past the garment line. Chiffon and lace are genuinely semi-transparent across whole regions, not just at the boundary. Loose threads are thinner than a pixel.
All three need continuous partial opacity to look right, which is why apparel is the category where the difference between a binary mask and a true matte is most visible.

Shoot for the cleanest possible separation and replace the background afterwards. Trying to capture the final white background in-camera is what creates unrecoverable cutouts.
Production sequence
- Steam and pin the garment; every wrinkle is cheaper to fix now than in post
- Light the garment and background separately so the edge is never in shadow
- Capture the main shot, then the inner collar without moving the camera
- Composite the inner shot behind the main one
- Remove the background and keep the result as a transparent PNG master
- Export flattened copies at each marketplace's required size and background
